1981 Schoolboy savors first Flyers Cup-in job of coach

March 29, 1981 When Greg Arnold was gliding around the rinks of the Inter-County League, centering for Scott Chamness and Jim Bolger on the most powerful hockey line ever seen in this area, there was no Flyers Cup. Arnold had left Archbishop Carroll High and gone to Canterbury (Conn.) Prep before the Flyers Cup became a reality last year. So, it was only fair he got a chance to participate this year as the coach. Carroll’s regular coaches (Gary Vetre and Frank DiGiandomenico) will be back behind the bench tonight when Carroll meets Pittsburgh North Catholic in the first-ever, Pennsylvania Cup But it was Greg Arnold, an 18-year-old senior at Canterbury, who coached the Patriots to their first three wins on their way to successfully defending the Flyers Cup. “It was exciting,” said Arnold, who will be helping out behind the bench at 7:30 tonight in Penn’s Class of ’23 […]

1981 Carroll wins Pennsylvania Cup, 4-3

Jeff Arnold, who scored two goals to go with the 17 he had in the Flyers Cup, was named the most valuable player. He received the Barry Ashbee Memorial Award for last night’s performance, to go […]

March 12, 1981 Scholastic hockey finally will get a legitimate state championship. The breakthrough, accomplished after a year of negotiations, came yesterday. The Flyers announced they will sponsor a state championship, named the Pennsylvania Cup, pitting the winner of the Flyers Cup (the Southeastern Pennsylvania champion) against the winner of ongoing playoffs among three, previously warring, Western Pennsylvania Leagues. The game will be played at 7:30pm, Sunday, March 29, at Penn’s Class of 1923 Rink. Next year’s Pennsylvania Cup will be played at a Western Pennsylvania location and the one-game championship will alternate between east and west in future years. The Flyers Cup opens Monday at the Penn rink with a somewhat different format from last year. The championship still involves the top two teams from the Inter-County League (defending champion Archbishop Carroll and Haverford High), the league champion of the Suburban League (Germantown Academy) and the champion of the […]
