The Cup is still alive, but squirming. The defending champions scored a Cup-record 10 goals, defeating Bishop Egan, 10-3, at Penn. Phil Chamness set a record with seven assists, and linemate Jeff Arnold tied a record with five goals. The two now share the record for points in a game with eight each. In last night’s second game, Haverford defeated Germantown Academy, 6-4. Tonight’s second date of the round-robin portion of the tournament has Carroll meeting GA at 7 o’clock and Haverford meeting Egan at 9. The Carroll victory was enlivened by the presence of former star Greg Arnold behind the bench. This was significant because Arnold is an 18-year-old senior at Canterbury (Conn.) Prep, who is home on his spring break.

He was coaching the Patriots because head coach Gary Vetre and assistant Frank DiGiandomenico are serving suspensions handed down by the Inter-County League. “We had a disciplinary situation we did not feel we could ignore,” said ICSHL president Erwin von Allmen. Both Vetre and DiGiandomenico admitted to the presence of champagne in the Carroll locker room after last Wednesday’s ICSHL championship win over Haverford. “The parents brought it in,” DiGiandomenico said. “I was on the ice at the time, and Gary was at the scorers’ table.”

“We didn’t feel we were responsible,” Vetre said, “since neither Frank nor I were aware it was being brought in. The parents brought it in. When the league officials asked us to get it out, we got it out.” In any event, it was fortunate for Carroll that Greg Arnold was home on vacation and his younger brother, Jeff, came to play. “We were really high, really psyched up.” Jeff said, “because of what the league has been doing to us. That’s what really got us up for this game.”

“I think they’ve got momentum now,” Greg said. “They’ve had a lot of hassles from the league. A lot of people don’t want to see ’em win, but they want to win it all.” Since Carroll has won the Cup the two years the tournament has been in existence, that would seem to be an edge. “The experience really helps,” said Chamness, who contributed five as- sists in the second period as the Patriots set yet another record with six goals. “Half of these guys know how good it feels to win it. The second time around is gonna be twice as good.” Carroll also got three goals from Pat Marra and one from Frank Burdo. Egan, champion of the Lower Bucks County League and a team making its first Cup appearance, trailed only 2-1 at the end of one period. Bob Lawrence had a power-play goal for the Eagles and the teams played even.

But Carroll turned it into a rout in the second period, peppering Egan goaltender Tom Galione with 37 shots. Arnold was in complete control behind the bench, too. “No, I had never coached before, on any level,” said the former Inquirer all-area center. “I had helped out on the ice and at practices, but never behind the bench. “It was a thrill. I’d like to do it all the time. I like giving the orders in- stead of taking them all the time.”

First period: 1, Carroll, Burdo (Chamness, Arnold), 4:57. 2, Carroll, Arnold (Chamness), 5:40. 3, Egan, Law- rence (Stricker, Mundy), 14:14
Second period: Carroll, Marra (Chamness.
