Maybe not, but what the fans at the Flyers Cup saw last night appeared to be good enough. GA eliminated Haverford, 7-1, in last night’s second game. In the opener, West Chester took a commanding 2-0 lead in games by dumping Arch- bishop Ryan, 7-3. The Flyers Cup the regional hockey tournament that matches the winners of the four area leagues continues Monday night in the University City, Class of 1923 Rink. Ryan will meet GA at 9 p.m. Monday, with the loser eliminated, West Chester gets a bye to Wednesday’s 9 p.m. final, when it will face the GA- Ryan survivor. Germantown Academy got a masterful performance from freshman. goaltender Mike Richter, who turned back 23 of 24 Haverford shots. The Patriots also got three goals from Bob Brody in a game that not only served to wipe away some of the sting of this past Monday’s 7-3 upset loss to Ryan but created a rematch. Still, Craig was not entirely pleased. “It was not a complete effort,” grumped the former Penn defenseman. “There was no hustle both ways. I think we played at most, five good shifts. “Our game is two ways – a hard two ways for 45 minutes. It wasn’t 45 minutes of intensity, which they played, pretty much, all the year.” Craig did feel, however, that Monday’s rematch with Ryan will serve as a motivational factor. GA has been an overwhelming favorite to sweep the Cup and was embarrassed by last Monday’s loss. “I think you’ll see a different attitude,” he said. “The biggest thing with boys this age is the mental attitude. We had played Ryan at Christmas and beat them, 5-2. So, the kids came out [last Monday) and took it easy.”

Germantown Academy Patriots Bob Brody on the move.

Haverford withstood GA’s assaults until the second period. The Fords trailed only 1-0 at the end of a period, but Brody got the first of his hat trick goals (he has five for the tourney) only 1:35 into the second period and GA slowly pulled away. Richter allowed only a goal by Haverford’s John Peters. The Fords, last year’s finalist against two-time champion Archbishop Carroll, were ousted. West Chester, champions of the Inter-County League and a team that has lost only once all year, did what it needed to do. Facing Vince Craven, Ryan’s red-hot sophomore goaltend er, West Chester jumped out to a 4-0 lead. Sophomore defenseman Doug Bowman scored only 2 minutes, 40 seconds into the game, then ended the first period with a power-play goal. Bowman, who also scored in the third period, now has seven goals and an assist for the tournament. Ryan coach Chris Harrington was happy about a partial comeback in the third period, when Vince Damore scored twice, but was angry about the opening period. “They Ryan] came out with big heads,” Harrington said. “They had won too easily Monday and they weren’t ready. Finally, Damore got going, but then it was too late.” West Chester now must sit for a week (except for three of its players, who will be on the Inter-County League’s all-star team Monday night). It then will be in a winner- take-all game with the survivor of Monday night’s loser’s bracket game.

SCORING SUMMARY

West Chester vs Archbishop Ryan
First period: 1, West Chester, Bowman (unassisted), 2:40. 2, West Chester, Rhodes (Rode, Mundt), 6:03. 3, West Chester, Lassoov (Maloney, Kraft), 7:18. 4, West Chester, Bowman (Wheeler), 11:57.
Second period: 5, Ryan, Hunter (Matz), 4:33.
Third period: 6, West Chester, Knoll (Wheeler), 0:51. 7, Ryan, Damore (Hunter), 6:01. 8, West Chester, Lassoov (Maloney), 8:13. 9, Ryan, Damore (Hunter), 8:36. 10, West Chester, Bowman (Kraft, Rede), 12:27.
Shots on goal: West Chester – 9 8 11 28; Archbishop Ryan – 1 7 8 16
Goalies: West Chester, Rock; Ryan, Craven.
Officials: Steve Shaw and Jim Merron.

Germantown Academy vs Haverford
First period: 1, GA, Kline (unassisted), 2:56.
Second period: 2, GA, Brody (Schlegel, Wurts), 1:35. 3, GA, Mullaney (MacGregor, Schlegel), 9:53. 4, GA, Brody (unassisted), 12:11.
Third period: 5, GA, Schlegel (unassisted), 3:37. 6, H, Glynn (Mullaney), 8:02. 7, GA, Brody (MacGregor, Wurts), 8:30. 8, GA, C.
