Steve Kinsley recalls his freshman year on the hockey team at Malvern Prep. He particularly remembers being impressed by the seniors. “They were real leaders, and I said to myself, ‘When I’m a senior, I’m going to lead like that,” he said.. Kinsley is a senior now, and in recent weeks, he has demonstrated what a leader he is. As the captain and center of the Friars hockey team, Kinsley played an instrumental role in leading the team to a title in the Flyers Cup scholastic ice hockey championship. On the strength of six goals and three assists in the tournament’s four games, Kinsley was voted Most Valuable Player. Kinsley, a 6-foot, 180-pound Broomall resident, has been skating since he was 4 years old and has been playing hockey since he was 5. He doesn’t play any other sports. “Just hockey,” he said. “Hockey year-round.” In the off-season, he practices on the front lawn of his parents’ home. Next year, Kinsley plans to attend either Babson College, Babson Park, Mass, or Merrimack College, in North Andover, Mass., where he hopes to play hockey. He’s modest about his skill. “I hope I’m a better-than-average player,” he said. Would he like to play professional hockey some day? “It’s a dream,” he said. What’s not a dream is Kinsley’s accomplishments in the Flyers Cup and, earlier, over the course of the season. He led the Friars all year long. They are 24-1 for the season, and will play for the state championship this weekend. “If we can win that, that’ll make the dream complete,” said Kinsley.
