Scott Chamness<\/a> lives and sleeps and eats with his junior brother, Phil, but it will be a nail-biting evening in March before they get the chance to team up in hockey. Actually, the combination was forged last night at Penn’s Class of ’23 Rink as Archbishop Carroll faced defeat in the best-of-3 Flyers’ Cup finals, having lost the opener to Malvern Prep last Thursday by a score of 6-5.
Though the Patriots notched four goals in the third period of that game, Coach Dave Callaghan was not about to take chances this time around. Phil Chamness<\/a>, who had lately resided on defense because of an injury to John Arizini, was shifted to a wing spot and the result was, well, predictable. AS CARROLL THUMPED the Friars, 7-3, to set up tomorrow night’s rubber match at the same site, Scott totaled three goals and one assist and Phil had two and two. “We did play together in pee-wee a little bit,” noted Scott, who has fired 281 goals in four varsity seasons. “But until last season, that was about it. I can sympathize with Phil. Sometimes he feels it should be his turn to do something, that maybe he doesn’t get credit for some of the things he does.
“Phil has been shuffled around. He was a converted forward playing on defense, now we have moved him back up. But he is a great offensive player, and we might not even be here (still alive) if it wasn’t for him. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

“Basically, this was the same type of game as the other one. We dominated that one, too. We just didn’t score enough goals.” Aside from the Chamness brothers, a player with another famous name was aiding the Patriots’ cause. Freshman Jeff Arnold<\/a> centered the Chamness line, dealing three assists and scoring two goals. For three years, Greg Arnold<\/a> was the man who often fed Scott. “JEFF IS JUST like his brother,” Scott noted. “The PA announcer even calls him ‘Greg’ a lot. (Laughing) That gets him mad. He is our playmaker, no doubt about it. He brings the puck up and sets the table. Malvern was shading toward me and that opened things for the other guys.” Partially due to injuries, the Patriots (22-5- 1) failed to take the Division B title in the Inter-County League (losing to Radnor) then rebounded to sweep the playoff crown from Malvern, which they have beaten four-out-of- five so far. “Any post-season tournament is like a ‘cake,” said Coach Dave Callaghan. “If we can win it, that will be like icing.” Malvern got its goals from the three different players and the highlight was a short- handed breakaway job by Scott lanelli in the second period. Carroll’s Robb Schnorr registered 18 saves.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n
