In the first game at the Penn rink last night, defending champion Archbishop Carroll got five goals from red-hot Jeffrey Arnold to dump Germantown Academy, 6-4, despite a hat trick by GA freshman John Hopkinson. After two rounds, Carroll is 2-0, Haverford and Egan each are 1-1, and Germantown Academy is 0-2. The top two teams after Monday’s double-header advance to Wednesday’s final. Egan will play Germantown Academy at 7 p.m. Monday, and Carroll-Haverford will follow. “This just shows you that you have to take one game at a time,” said Egan coach Larry Clay, “because no one believed we could beat any of those teams. I heard people say we spoiled the tournament by being in it. They were laughing at us. But these kids came to play.” Clay was referring to the universal belief that the Inter-County League (represented this year by Carroll and Haverford) is vastly superior to the other two area leagues, and that Egan’s own Lower Bucks County League is the bottom of the heap. Prior to Egan’s win over Haverford, no school outside the Inter-County League had won a Flyers Cup game in the tournament’s brief, two-year existence. (Last year’s finalists were Carroll and Malvern Prep of the Inter-County, and Carroll and Haverford both won their openers Monday.) Clay made a surprise position switch just minutes before last night’s game, and it worked sensationally. McNamee had been a forward early in the year but was playing defense recently due to a spate of injuries. “The captains, Rick Szygiel and George Mundy, came up to me yesterday and said we’d be better with (forward] Dan Guerrio on defense,” Clay said. “He’s steadier, and Vince is more offense-minded. Vince played the best game of his life.”

Jeff Arnold, on the other hand, scores five goals a game on regular occasions. He did it Monday night, too. The Cup record is 14, by Carroll’s Scott Chamness, and Arnold could leave that behind with two more hot games. A relentless offense is Carroll’s strategy, as the Patriots have only two regular defensemen, Carmen DiGiandomenico and Pat Marra. Needless to say, they play the entire game, which makes it difficult to adopt the traditional hockey strategy of playing much more defensively in playoff situations. “It’s just the opposite with us,” Arnold said. “We’ve got to get Carmen and Pat a chance to rest, so we play in the other end as much as we can. That way they can rest a bit while we’re on offense.” It was Marra who may have played the most instrumental part in the win, however, as he scored an unassisted goal to give Carroll a 4-2 lead, then fed Arnold on a shorthanded breakaway with the goal that broke GA’s back.

Archbishop Carroll vs Germantown Academy
First period: 1, AC, Arnold (Marra), 6:33. 2, AC, Arnold (DiGiandomenico), 9:36. 3, GA, Hopkinson (MacGregor, Brody), 10:30. 4, GA, Revdell (Wurts), 11:54.
Second period: 5, AC, Arnold (unassisted ), 8:47.
Third period: 6, AC, Marra (unassisted), 9:12. 7, GA, Hopkinson (MacGregor, Reydell), 13:24. 8, AC, Arnold (Marra), 13:52. 9, GA, Hopkinson (Brody), 14:18. 10, AC, Arnold (Chamness), 14:53.
Shots on goal: AC: 9-5-6–20: GA: 3-2-7–12.
Goalies: AC: Schnorr; GA: Hinkson.
Officials: Mike Condon and Mike Curley.

Haverford vs Bishop Egan
First period: 1, H, McGhee (J.
