BONNER TOPS GERMANTOWN FOR FLYERS CUP

HAVERTOWN, PA. Returning to its gritty, determined style and leaving the pretty plays behind, Monsignor Bonner rose to its coach’s challenge Monday and edged Germantown Academy, 3-2, to win its second straight Flyers Cup championship. The Friars swept the best-of-three series, and in doing so became the third team to defend its Flyers Cup title in the tournament’s 14 years. Only Archbishop Carroll and Germantown Academy had won successive titles. The Friars will advance to Saturday’s state championship game at 2 p.m. at the Skatium. There, they will have a rematch with Meadville, the Penguins Cup winner from the Pittsburgh region that beat the Friars, 9- 3, in last year’s title game. Friars coach Ted Dolan was critical of his team after it beat GA, 5-1, in Friday’s opener. Dolan chided his players for not giving an all-out effort and relying on “pretty plays” to get by the Patriots. But on Monday night, in front of 700 people, the Friars returned to their bump-and-grind tactics, thei relentless forechecking and their dogged pursuit of the puck. Their rattling hits left GA players scattered around the ice like litter in a park. Their physical game was earmarked by Mike Jacobs check that put a Patriots player in an emergency room with a split chin. With their backs to the wall, the Patriots appeared more charged than Bonner in the opening period they matched the Friars’ checks and were a step quicker. The payoff came just three minutes, fifty-six seconds into the game when Ryan Kilstein found himself one-on-one with goalie Jim Bauer and popped the puck into the upper right corner of the net for a 1-0 lead. “They knew this was it and gave it everything they had,” said Patriots coach John Ioia, whose team ended the season at 18-7-2. Bonner picked it up a notch in the second period. After keeping the puck in GA’s zone for better than a minute, the Friars evened the score when Jacobs tried a wrap-around shot and Mark Anzideo was at the other side to swat in the rebound. “It was a scrappy goal, and they made us work for it,” said Dolan, who noted it as the turning point of the game. “It fired us up and made us realize we’d have to work to score goals.” While profiting from hard work, Bonner also had a bit of luck. Less than two minutes after Anzideo’s goal, Friars winger Ed Smith crossed the blue line and released a wrist shot through a defenseman’s legs. The shot caught Patriots goalie Mike Marino off guard and found the lower right corner, and Bonner had a 2-1 lead. The clincher that gave Bonner a two-goal lead, however, was another product of pure effort, and that came on the part of Jerry DiStefano early in the third period. The Friars’ captain later named the tournament’s MVP and its high scorer with six goals and two assists skated in from the right side and let fly a wrist shot. Marino made the initial save but could not hold onto the puck. DiStefano, wrestling with two defenders in front, finally kicked it to Rich Tremonte, who tapped it in. “I didn’t think we’d score on that, but our coaches always say to play to the whistle,” DiStefano said. “That was the game.” The goal did indeed prove to be the winner. GA fought back with one last flurry in the game’s final minutes, with the Friars two men down and Marino off the ice for an extra skater. Mike Sivel took a face-off draw from Curt Goldman and beat Bauer to make it 3-2 with forty-one seconds left. But from there, Bauer (17 saves) held on, and the cup belonged to the Friars for another year. What remains to be seen is whether Bonner (22-2-2) can wrestle the state trophy from Meadville. To do so would be an especially nice parting gift for Dolan, who is stepping down after 10 years with the team. “They’re bigger than us and have an edge in talent, but we know them better than last year,” Dolan said. “We couldn’t ask for a better scenario with it being our rink and for all the marbles.”
